On 2 November 2026 Roblox posted an update on account bans, alt detection and appeals, after many players and creators said they had been banned over accounts they didn’t recognise. The short version: Roblox says it only bans accounts for severe or repeated violations, sharing Wi-Fi or using a VPN won’t get you banned on its own, and you can appeal a ban up to two times, usually within 30 days.
What Roblox announced
The update was posted by Roblox staff on the Developer Forum and updated again on 5 November. Besides explaining how bans work, it listed what Roblox is changing:
- Clearer ban notices. Some notices named an old username the player didn’t recognise. Roblox paused the username scan that caused those bans while it improves the notices.
- Fairer Marketplace penalties. An item flagged for words in its description gets a lighter consequence the first time than for repeat violations.
- A new Issues & appeals page on the Creator Hub, so everyone who can edit a game, not only its owner, can see the game’s violations and appeal them.
- More kinds of takedowns will become appealable in the coming months.
What gets an account banned
Roblox says it bans accounts for severe or repeated violations of its Community Standards, not for everyday mistakes. Severe violations are the ones that put other people at risk, such as child endangerment, real-world harm and hate speech. Breaking smaller rules again and again after warnings can also end in a ban.
Roblox is also open about a limit of its systems: they can’t tell what you meant. If something on your account or in your game looks like a violation, it can be flagged even when it was innocent. That is what appeals are for.
Alt accounts: shared Wi-Fi, VPNs and family
When an account is banned for a severe violation, Roblox also bans other accounts it is confident belong to the same person. It looks at device, behaviour and identity signals together, and it doesn’t publish the full list, so banned players can’t dodge it. This is what Roblox says about the situations players asked about most:
| Situation | What Roblox says |
|---|---|
| You share Wi-Fi at school, a library or home | Not a reason for action on its own. Roblox looks at several signals together. |
| You use a VPN | Not a reason for action on its own. Roblox calls a VPN a helpful safety tool. |
| A brother, sister or friend gets banned | Not a reason to ban you on its own. Appeal if you think it happened anyway. |
| Repeated abuse comes from one household (shared IP, devices or emails) | Roblox may act on every account connected to it, because it often can’t tell one person from several. |
| Your ban names an old username you don’t recognise | Not a mistake: Roblox resets old usernames that broke its rules. Only the banned account can appeal. |
Keep one account per person and never share your login. Roblox asks players not to buy, sell or share accounts: an account that was used by someone else can carry their violations with it.
How to appeal a Roblox ban
- 1Read the ban notice. It tells you how long the ban lasts and, when Roblox can share it, the reason. A reason of “Other” means Roblox won’t share the details; it suggests updating the app or checking roblox.com, where it keeps improving these notices.
- 2Sign in and open Violations & Appeals (roblox.com/report-appeals), Roblox’s page for your account’s violations, and appeal the one you think is wrong.
- 3If there is no appeal option there, contact Roblox Support (roblox.com/support) instead.
- 4Keep it short: your username and a few sentences on why you think the decision is wrong. If you write to Support, send it from the email address on your account.
- 5Got an instant rejection? You can appeal again. Roblox allows up to two appeals per decision.
Don’t wait too long. Appeals are generally open for 30 days after a ban, and longer in some regions; after that you may not be able to appeal at all. In some regions, appealing a ban for a linked account asks you to verify your ID, so Roblox can tell two real people apart. Roblox reviews appeals with a mix of people and automated systems, and only talks about a case with the account holder, so a friend can’t appeal for you.
What not to do
- Don’t make a new account to get around a ban. Roblox bans accounts it links to the banned one, so the new account is likely to go too.
- Don’t post other players’ account details in public, even to prove a point. Roblox says it exposes their personal information and makes cases harder to review.
- Don’t pay anyone to “unban” you. Only Roblox can lift a Roblox ban. Unban services, “Roblox staff” in your DMs and recovery offers are after your password or your Robux; our account security guide shows what to do if you already shared a login.
Banned from one game, not from Roblox
If you can still use Roblox but one game kicks you out with a ban message, that game banned you, not Roblox. Developers can ban players from their own experience for as long as they choose, show their own reason, and include alt accounts. Roblox’s appeals process is for Roblox’s own moderation, so a game ban is up to that game’s developers: look for an appeal form or a support channel in the game’s community group or Discord.
Keep your account in good standing
Most bans never come near players who keep their account to themselves. Turn on 2-Step Verification, use a password you don’t use anywhere else, and treat anyone asking for your login as a scammer, as our guide to free Robux scams explains.
The same goes for reward sites. FarmRBX only needs your Roblox username, never your password, and pays out with a gamepass in your own account, as our guide to how withdrawals work shows. Any site that wants your login can put exactly the account you are protecting at risk.
